40 by Christmas: Week 3

I was a little anxious about hopping on the scale this morning, as I didn’t get in as much biking as hoped for last week. On Tuesday I was almost hit by a truck while biking home*, so I didn’t bike on Wednesday and on Thursday I had to run errands after work and was lazy that evening and didn’t go for a ride. I did go for a nice 45 min ride on Saturday morning though. It was pouring rain and cold on Sunday so I didn’t make it out for a ride then either.

I believe I did quite well with eating though as I’ve been paying attention to what I eat and though I still think I’m eating too much, my stomach is definitely shrinking and I can tell the moment I eat too much (in relation to how much I’m eating now).
So when I did hop on the scale I was pleasantly surprised to see 232.4. That’s down 2lbs from last week’s 234.4. My goal is to be below 230 next Monday, so I’m going to work hard to achieve that.

My wife and I are going to start the 30 day challenge on EA Sports Active we have for our Wii. We did some last year and really enjoyed it but then things got derailed when we had a baby. So we’re committed to doing it together which will be helpful. When we did it last time I found the band to be completely useless and I may as well have been doing it without any resistance. So this time my wife will do the exercises with the band and remotes, and I’m going to be doing them as well but with some higher resistance bands and weights and not worry about the remotes. This will allow me to get the same workout but with resistance that I can actually feel.

In the comments of last week’s post, Que asked, “what I feel is my biggest obstacle with losing weight.” So I thought I’d answer it in this week’s post as it is a challenge I face every day, and that is my love of food. I love to eat. I crave salt. Salty carbs are my weakness and I find it very hard to resist them. The best bet is to keep them out of the house completely and when I do eat them, to eat them in small amounts. If I only take a small amount out of the bag in a bowl, that is all I will eat.

A fellow dad on twitter, @PapaRocks6 also asked me how can he best support me as I try to shed these pounds. I immediately thought of another dad I talk to on Twitter, @fotodad, who asks me once a week or so how the weight loss is going, and I always appreciate that. It helps keep me accountable, and for me that is really helpful. It is really easy to let things slide when it is just me, but when I have someone else holding me accountable I do much better.

This past week I came across another blogging dad that is on the path to shed some pounds. Donny Claxton of DaddyClaxton.com is using EA Sports Active and looking for some support.

Again, thanks for all the support! I can’t believe I’m down almost 10 lbs in 3 weeks, and I’m excited to break the 230 mark.

*I was riding along the bike trail and going pretty quick so that I could make the light at the intersection where the path crosses a road. There was a truck approaching the intersection from my left, but since he had a red and no signal light on, I assumed he was going to stop. Well, in this city people don’t use their signal lights, something I forgot about and as I entered the intersection he didn’t stop. I slammed on my brakes but couldn’t stop in time and leaned to the side away from the truck. He hit the brakes and stopped just as I fell over in front of him so that I ended up with my bike sitting just under his bumper. All good though as he didn’t actually hit me and I just have a few bruises, which I think are mostly due to the fact that my feet clip into my pedals and I didn’t get them out quick enough to break my fall.

Again, I am so relieved you are safe. And WOOHOO! More loss – you are doing it buddy.

I feel your pain about the salty food. Since I can’t have it [I am limited to 1000mg a day for the CHF - if I exceed it I can feel the effects in my lungs - water retention and I can't breath - so I reallllly can't have them.] I did find that watching my sodium intake I rarely look at calories but somehow have managed to not be able to gain past my current weight of 121.4 pounds. [My low was 116 - I was happy to get to 121 :) ] I miss salty food so much, but have managed to use other things in it’s place [fresh herbs and seasonings] and that helps make things taste better. So while you are looking at your calories look at the sodium content too – I think it says a healthy person should have no more than 2350 mg a day [it is right in that ballpark - I can't quite remember I just know it is over double what I can have] Also by cutting salt you retain less water. Double win.

I promise to ask how it is going more often – I am always sending good thoughts your way [I almost spelled that "weigh" heehee] and you are doing an awesome job.

Can’t wait for my Chistmas picture this year. I am getting one right? I mean no pressure or anything…….heehee

I know this may not be helpful, as craving salty carbs has more to do with how extremely tasty they are than your body actually wanting them. However, my chiro told me that when my body is craving salt, its often because I’m dehydrated. Now, obviously this doesn’t account for the yummy factor (if you know what I mean) BUT if your body is properly hydrated, you may have less cravings for salt. (That is if you don’t get the reccomended 2+ L. A day..)
Just thought I would throw that out there. Helpful or not… :)

I think a lot of us have a salt problem. I know different things work fer different people. But what ended up working for me was cutting out as much sodium and drinking as much water as my bladder could stand. I’m going to check out that EA Sports thing though.
