In Awe of Change

Dear Bean,

You are a source of constant amazement in my life. Now this has been true from the time you were born, but in the last month or so you’ve been developing in tangible ways that are amazing to watch. Everything from increased motor function, to looking when we call your name, and even understanding our tone of voice when we tell you not to do something (and you actually stop!). You make me such a proud father.

3 weeks ago I could put you down, walk away, and upon my return you’d be in the same spot (or fallen over). Now you cannot be contained, well, closed doors and baby gates work… for now. It’s so cute watching you do your little army crawl all over the house. Occasionally you’ll get up on hands and knees, but you still aren’t totally comfortable in that position and can move quicker on your belly. You’ve also developed the ability to transition from laying down to sitting. It’s handy because I can put you down in the living room, go into the kitchen to do dishes and you can sit and play, or follow me. Yesterday you followed me into the kitchen to see what I was doing, it obviously didn’t look interesting, so you slithered back into the living room and proceeded to play with your toys. The fact that you are able to sit and amuse yourself makes me very happy.

You’ve also started using me and your mom as a jungle gym. It’s fun to lay on the floor and have you try and crawl up and over us, though my leg hairs don’t always appreciate being handholds, I don’t think I’ve lost any yet. Your legs are getting stronger every day, and while just a couple of days ago you couldn’t really pull yourself up to standing while crawling over me, last night you did it multiple times.

You can also feed yourself. I know you’ve been able to do that for a few months now, but the motor function you are developing to do so is so fun to watch. I love your little pincer actions with your thumb and forefinger as you pick things up. Or even how you explore things with your little finger extended, which reminds me of E.T.. Recently you’ve learned how to push food into your mouth that isn’t all the way in. And while it makes a giant mess, and usually happens because you haven’t opened your mouth enough for the spoon, it’s another little development that I watch in amazement.

And while these developments will be such minor things in the grand scheme of things, watching you go through them and experiencing things with you will never get old. This is an amazing time of growth and development in your life and I’m so glad I’m around to experience it all with you.

Love,

Dad

Great letter to your son. Man how I miss those days! But that being said the days to come are even better.

I know with this comment I may sound like a broken record. But, for you and your family it’s great to be able to chronicle these moments. It seem as if once they start moving independently and discovering themselves and their loved ones change starts happening more rapidly. It’s very exciting and wonderful how the little things they are learning now we as parents get to see it develop before our eyes. Before I was a father I never put much thought to when people would say “you love your kid a little bit more each day”. Now I feel it and I understand it. Best of luck and enjoy. It’s a wonderful time and it gets better.

my son is only a little past this stage and it made me reminisce about all! After the pincer grasp, my son learned to grab things in fistfuls, and squish all his food in his hand! Great post! have a good weekend with Bean!

Thanks. Things go so fast with each milestone eclipsing the previous that I need to write them down or I’ll forget.

That’s awesome! He’s just moving into that stage now, and it’s hilarious. And while the cleanup is a little more work, it makes me laugh to watch.

I love your comments! :) I’m noticing even now that things are moving more and more quickly, and I’m learning that I need to chronicle these events or I’ll lose them. Thanks!
