Please learn to sleep again

Dear Bean,

I’m not sure what this sudden aversion to sleeping is all about, but anytime you are tired of it, feel free to start sleeping again.

Naps seem to go okay, but when I put you down to sleep for the night you start screaming like someone is about to murder you. I promise, they aren’t. It’s just me here.

Tonight I’ve read to you, rocked you, and held you, yet still you cry. The best part is when you finally quiet down and lie there for about 30 seconds when out of nowhere you just start screaming again. That’s lots of fun, I really enjoy that.

It’s been about 15 minutes now and you don’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. With the exception of the silence and then screaming fits. Like I said, they are the fun ones.

So please, learn to enjoy going to bed again. Learn to fall asleep when you are tired, not just lay there and cry. I’m glad we’ve moved away from swaddling, and it’s awesome that you know how to put your soother back it, but you also need to learn how to find it when you drop it or spit it out. I’m sure that will come with time though.

Love,

Dad

So, you’re at that stage. You just reminded me what I’ve forgotten about babyhood. My memories are all smiling, fresh faced, clean smelling babies that are now teens. It seems so easy in my memories. I forgot it’s not. I hope Bean and you get some sleep . . . soon.

I came from Dad-Blogs. Great site, isn’t it?

Oh man, A just started doing that this week too and it sucks! To be honest, I’m sure I’ll sound like the worst parent in the world, but I just let her cry it out. I checked on her once and she had her soother. I knew she was also fed and dry so I let her go and eventually she’s fallen asleep…

I know everyones’ kids are different. But I will tell you this… Be happy your child even sleeps! Our 2 youngest children didn’t start sleeping through the night until 18 months. That alone is enough for me to never have any more children. So we had the (currently) 4 year old. And just about the time she started sleeping through the night we found out we were having another one. And the cycle stated over again. We were complete jealous of people who had children that were sleeping through the night in a few days, weeks or months. It just wasn’t in the stars for us. We are finally at the point to where they both sleep until 6:00am. And that is early, but I will take it!

Yes, we still get naps. He's cut down to 3 a day, but still naps great. :) It's just the sleeping at night that we struggle with now. But even that isn't a huge deal in relation to the lack of sleep some parents get.

I am well aware that we have it good with his sleeping, and my complaining is relative to how amazing he has been in the past. :)
From 6 weeks he started sleeping through the night, and did so until 4 or 5 months. Since then he wakes up a couple of times a night,
I hear stories similar to yours about children not sleeping, and it would totally turn me off from having another one. But with my luck our next one will be like that. lol I'm glad you are getting some sleep now though.

Seems to be a common sort of problem around this age. And if you are the worst parent for letting her cry, then I'll join you in that club. (Though I don't we are bad parents for letting our children cry) I know some would argue and say that letting your child cry is wrong, but I disagree. Lately I've been leaving him to cry himself to sleep, and eventually he calms down. He is fed, dry, and has his soother. He'll go to sleep when he's tired enough. :)

Dad-Blogs is awesome. :) Thanks for dropping by.

It's an interesting stage, one I know he'll grow out of, but it is still tough now. I'm sure my memories will be of him all, “smiling, fresh faced, clean smelling” when he gets older. :)

You should get a book called wonder weeks… it's awesome… and yes a lot of babies go through a regression… you just have to figure out a new way that it works for YOU! I find I can be understanding only so much until… it really really doesn't work for me any longer.. there are always loving ways to teach our kids the right way :)

Normally he's a great sleeper. I think he was just going through a little sleep regression, or whatever they call it. :)

I'll check out that book though, it sounds interesting, thanks.
